How to Play
Goal: Outlast the computer. Both riders leave a solid trail behind them, and the first to hit a wall or any trail loses the round.
Controls: Arrow keys or WASD on desktop. On mobile, swipe in the direction you want to turn or use the on-screen pad. You cannot reverse into your own trail.
Rules: A round starts the moment you turn or tap Start. Speed creeps up as the round goes on. A head-on collision is a draw. Your match record is saved on your device.
About Light Cycles
Light Cycles is the purest version of a very old arcade idea: two riders, two solid trails, and a shrinking arena. Nothing is hidden and nothing is random. Every loss is a wall you built yourself, which is what makes it satisfying rather than frustrating.
The strategic core is space, not speed. Because your own trail is as deadly as your opponent's, every move you make reduces the room you have left. Good play means filling space efficiently, hugging your own trail rather than leaving useless gaps, and keeping a route back into open territory. The player who runs out of room first loses, and that is usually a decision made twenty moves earlier.
The computer here uses a flood fill to measure how much open space each possible turn would leave it, then takes the best option with a mild preference for going straight. That makes it genuinely competent at avoiding self-traps and quite good at cutting you off, but it can still box itself in when the arena gets tight, which is where most of your wins will come from.
Light Cycles habits that win rounds
- Hug your own trail. Leaving a one-cell gap beside your line wastes a cell you can never use, and those add up fast.
- Fill space in tight lines rather than long loops. Sweeping the arena in a spiral is the classic beginner mistake because it strands the middle.
- Cut the arena in half early if you can, then take the bigger side. Whoever has more room to fill wins on space alone.
- Watch the computer's head, not its trail. It is deciding based on open space, so if you narrow its options it will often turn into a pocket.
- Keep an escape route. A path with only one exit is a trap you have walked into voluntarily.
FAQ
What are the controls for Light Cycles?
Arrow keys or WASD on desktop. On mobile you can swipe in the direction you want to turn or use the on-screen pad. Reversing directly into your own trail is not allowed.
How do you win a round?
By outlasting the computer. Both riders leave a solid trail, and the first to hit a wall or any trail loses. A head-on collision counts as a draw.
Why do I keep trapping myself?
Almost always because of wasted space. Leaving gaps beside your own trail, or sweeping the arena in big loops, strands areas you can never reach again. Hug your trail and fill space in tight lines instead.
How does the computer decide where to go?
It runs a flood fill for each possible turn to measure how much open space that move would leave it, then picks the best option with a mild preference for continuing straight. It is good at avoiding traps but can still box itself in.
Does the game get faster?
Yes. The speed creeps up as a round goes on, so late-round turns need more anticipation. Your match record is saved on your device between visits.
